Okay, by now we have all read it, the newspaper headlines that scream fertility medications that “offer no benefit”. I wonder just how many sinking hearts attached to striking wombs were greeted from across the morning bowl of corn flakes with this latest infertility news?
The British Medical Journey has published findings suggesting that clomiphene citrate (commonly known by its brand names of Clomifert or Clomid does not have “any significant benefit over no treatment at all”.
The study had focused on the use of the drug in conjunction with Intrauterine insemination (IUI).
Lifeslurper’s fourth IVF cycle which ended with a whimper only last week was kick started by five days of Clomid. On the Cycle Day 8 ultrasound, the follicles were miniscule. This was a markedly different response to the three prior cycles which saw mature follicles ready for collection at the time of the scan.
There is already enough guilt and grief to go around. Suspecting this result was a result of a drug that has had a very poor performance in legitimate medical trials is stunning.
With infertility we have little choice but to embrace new medical developments with open arms and open wombs. Are we justified in feeling a little let down when we are pointed in the wrong direction?
